From the F&B...

Hello All
Well another great season of golf is coming to an end, where does the time go.  I would like to start off by thanking everyone who was at the closing dinner and awards night, and congratulations to all the winners that night.
Also special thanks to the Glenora Gang (Don Parks, Marc Drolet, Gene Clevenger), who kick off the Pub Night season with a "Jam session" in the club house. There were several musicians that joined in from 8 years old and up. Don*t be afraid to bring out your musical talents next time they play. It was a great show!
Well the first annual Keith's Cup (Staff verses Members Golf Challenge) was played on Oct 23. The food and beverage team was looking for some payback after the members team beat them quite handily in baseball in the summer. Unfortunately the staff team took another beating at the hands of  Don Goodridge*s gang of sandbaggers. It was a beautiful fall day and we all had a lot of fun but the members team took 6 1/2 to 3 1/3.  Thanks again guys and we are looking forward to the rematch next year, or during SnowBowl Two (Football on the driving range in the winter).
Coming up in November the hours of operation for F&B will be changing. The food and beverage department will be open every Friday night for Pub Night. We will still have great deals on drinks as well as a tasty pub menu. The good guys at Labatt are also with us again this year, thus we will do our weekly draws for some nice prizes and the last Friday of every month we'll draw for Senators tickets.  If you would like to have a group come in for Lunch or dinner please feel free to give me a call in the office at extension 214 and I would be glad to help make the arrangements.
Join us for the second annual Bridal Show at the clubhouse on Sunday Nov 16 we will be having several different vendors from all aspects of wedding planning as well as a fashion show for all the latest bridal gowns.  Admission to the show is $5 donation or a non perishable food item for the Kingston Food Bank.
Join us on November the 15th for the Backwards Golf Tournament. It's perfect for all of us lefties since we golf backwards anyways. Join us for a fun scramble and some hot Chili and cold drinks in the clubhouse after. Sign up in the Proshop.
The Members Christmas Dinner/ Christmas Gift Giving will be held on Friday Nov 28.  It will be a buffet dinner featuring oven roasted Turkey and Honey Glazed Ham with all the fixins. We will have some singers and carolers if you would to sing along or get up and dance. Also Cindy will let everyone know according to your last name as to what age you can buy a kid a present for if you wish.
The Country Christmas will be held on Sunday Dec 14 with lots of fun things for everyone as well as the kids. Postings will be put up around the club as well next months newsletter will have all the details.
In Closing as I'm sure most of you are aware by now that one of our friends, Victoria was in a serious accident a few weeks back. I just wanted to let everyone know that she is doing better at Kingston General Hospital. She is still has a long road to recovery and is not quite ready for visitors. She is going to be transferred to St Mary's hospital very soon and will be able to start excepting visitors soon after. I will defiantly keep everyone posted and your love and concern is appreciated very much. We are putting together a card and flower arrangement for her when she can except it just let me know if you would like to be involved or make a contribution.

Director of Food Services

In closing -
A man is stranded on a desert island, all alone for ten years. One day, he sees a speck in the horizon. He thinks to himself, "It's not a ship." The speck gets a little closer and he thinks, "It's not a boat." The speck gets even closer and he thinks, "It's not a raft." Then, out of the surf comes this gorgeous blonde woman, wearing a wet suit and scuba gear. She comes up to the guy and says, "How long has it been since you've had a cigarette?"
"Ten years!", he says.
She reaches over and unzips a waterproof pocket on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack of fresh cigarettes.
He takes one, lights it, takes a long drag, and says, "Man, oh man! Is that good!"
Then she asked, "How long has it been since you've had a drink of whiskey?"
He replies, "Ten years!"
She reaches over, unzips her waterproof pocket on her right sleeve, pulls out a flask and gives it to him.
He takes a long swig and says, "Wow, that's fantastic!"
Then she starts unzipping a longer zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit and she says to him, "And how long has it been since you've had some real fun?"
And the man replies, "Wow! Don't tell me that you've got golf clubs in there!"

Healthy Heart

November 3rd kicks off the Fall/Winter session of the Healthy Hearts at Loyalist and again over 100 members have registered.  Team leaders met on October 28th to review the program, check out equipment and schedules and are all set to launch another busy and healthy session.  Group listings have been posted at the Clubhouse and leaders will be contacting all members regarding times, etc.
We have attempted to recognize stated preferences for times and this has resulted in a couple of groups being quite large.  While the team leaders have agreed to work with the larger classes it will be important that everyone respects the time schedules posted.  Hopefully no problems will be experienced but if they are, we might have to re-visit the class sizes.  It is appropriate to recognize the team leaders as it is their dedication and effort the makes the program work so well year after year.
So, many thanks to:
Don Barnes       Penny Chianelli         Tom Hansen          Art Keir
Ron Lacey        Ian McClure              Bob Wray
If anyone has missed registering, please check with Cindy and although we may not be able to accommodate your exact preference initially we will work you in somewhere.  Departure of the *Snow Birds* early in the New Year invariably provides an opportunity to make adjustments or add new registrations.  Any question regarding the program can be directed to me or any of the team leaders.

Golf Association of Ontario

The 2008 Fall meeting of the Kingston District was convened at Amherstview Golf Club on Saturday, October 18th and Loyalist had the largest participation of all clubs in attendance.  The commitment of our membership in support of the GAO is really quite outstanding and is deserving of acknowledgement.  Serving on next year*s executive will be:
Marg Beck - Assistant Co-ordinator, Tournaments
Shirley Egerton - Co-ordinator, Tournaments
Suzie Julien - Co-ordinator, Course Rating & Handicapping
Judy Rix - Co-ordinator, Junior Programs
Dick Turner - Assistant Co-ordinator, Intersectional Tournaments
Don Goodridge and Judy Rix representing the Men's and Ladies Leagues were in attendance along with Vernanne Ahern and Deputy, GAO Rep, Ron Lacey.  A great showing!
A common theme from most of the committee reports was the impact of the rainy season but despite the weather all scheduled events were completed, albeit some a little delayed or played a little shorter than planned.  With 2008 now behind us, work has already began on the 2009 season and recorded below are a couple of dates already confirmed.
Women's Player Development
May 23 & 24, 2009 at Black Bear Golf Club - Handicap Index of 24.9 or less required.
Men's Player Development
June at Smuggler's Glen (specific dates to be confirmed) - Handicap index of 20.0 or less.
Intersectional Competitions 2009
Womens-August 30th & 31st
Mens-September 13th & 14th
Loyalist has again been selected to host a Provincial Championship next year and the Mid Amateur Men's Championship will be here June 22nd to 25th.  The membership of Loyalist did the Club proud with outstanding volunteer representation last year and we are hoping to build on the experience of the past and do even better this year.   More information will be provided on this event as the time gets closer.

GAO Representative

Mike Compeau Farewell/Roast October 8, 2008
A splendid event with over 130 in attendance.
Mike Compeau along with his lovely wife Gillian and Baby Leah were touched by the heartfelt sincerity and generosity of so many members. It was very clear that there are many people who are very fond of Mike.
Festivities were hosted by Eric King who once again was at his best. Speakers who took turns in praising/roasting Mike included Judy Rix, Don Goodridge, Rudy Gazarek, Jim Burlington, Ben and Nate Doornekamp, Mike Ferguson and George Krauss. There was a nice balance of serious comments and laughs a plenty.
Mike received many wonderful gifts including the following:
A tree has been planted by Jim Burlington on the right side rough of hole 3. Jim's story in regards to Mike's adventures on this hole and tendency to spray "big right" was very humorous. In the end many were brought to tears when Jim dedicated this tree to Mike to ensure he will always be with us. A plaque will be placed on the tree.
The generosity of numerous Members resulted in the following group gifts:
A beautiful flower arrangement was presented to Gillian
An Esquire diamond studded watch engraved with the inscription "LCC 2008".
A large bottle of Mike's favorite rum.
$300 gift certificate for the Best Western that can be used in a variety of ways, (accommodation, dinner, spa).
$150 gift certificate from Cadillac Fairview for use in a variety of venues in the Mall.
A portrait sketch created by Michelle MacKinnon (who worked in Food and Beverage during the summer). This great work from this fine artist was framed and presented to Mike. The inscription on the sketch read " Thanks Compeau, we remember, Members 2008".
Thanks to Mike Kerr who was once again at his best snapping wonderful quality pictures.
Those in attendance enjoyed a fine menu of Mike Compeau special meals and discounted beer. Thanks to Keith MacVicar, Dave Noll the Servers and Kitchen staff for their tremendous food and service.
At the end of the festivities everyone enjoyed special cakes and cookies provided to us by Norma Ferguson.
Numerous individuals played significant roles to make this day the best it could be for Mike Compeau and family. Gratitude and big thanks is extended to Eric King, the above mentioned speakers, Norma Ferguson, Cindy Lawson, Yvonne and Dale Henderson, Gary Tackaberry, Becky Burlington, Darlene Krauss and Joyce Friesen.
It was a superb night and a very fond farewell to a "fine gentleman".
Regards, George Krauss
