From the Operations’ Manager

It won’t be long now and the tees will be in the ground, there will be the smell of fresh cut grass and the lost balls of another golfing season. Can*t wait!

As spring breaks and the season starts to draw closer, check our website frequently for updates on potential course opening dates. Last season we set a record for Loyalist with a March 26 opening. Pretty tough to match that, but hopefully Mother Nature will co- operate and Scott will *get us on the links* as soon as possible.

Hope everyone has had an opportunity to enjoy the Olympics and by the time you read this, the men*s hockey team, like the women, has won gold.

During mid-March our 2010 new stock will arrive and the pro-shop will officially open April 1 (unless of course Scott and the weather allow an earlier opening). Look for our new lines and some early season specials.

John Boyle will be helping us in the shop this season, so don*t be shy if you need a fitting. John will arrange a time to fit you properly.

Our pro-shop prides itself on being highly competitive with other shops, so if you have seen something elsewhere, check with your pro-shop, maybe we can save you a couple of bucks, even if it is just in fuel and time.

As the season begins to fast approach, it will again be time for our committees to prepare for 2010. Anyone interested in becoming involved in one of our committees please contact Jenn at extension 210 or jenn@loyalistcc.com.

In closing *

Two young blonde women were playing golf at a foggy par three, and could see the flag, but not the green. Each hit their ball anyway. When they walked to the green, they discovered one ball about three feet from the cup, while the other ball somehow had gone directly in.
The blondes tried to figure out which ball belonged to who, since they were both using Titleist number threes. Unable to decide, they returned to the Club House and asked the golf pro for a ruling.
After hearing their story and congratulating them both on their superb shots under such adverse conditions the pro asked, “Okay, so who was playing the yellow ball?”

Jim Burlington

From the F&B…….

We*re coming down the stretch with spring in sight. My clubs are clean and at the front door waiting for the most exciting six words of the year – *The golf course is now open!*

February saw another successful food of the world event as Chef Jason took us on a tour of the southern USA. The lobster and crab bisque was the hit of the night with over 50 bowls served. Our next stop will be Hungary on March 9. The cuisine will be authentic and delicious as Chef Jason is of Hungarian heritage and is very proud of the dishes he can create. Sign-up with me at ext. 214, or with Jenn in the office.

March also brings us one of the most entertaining holidays of the year*.St. Patrick*s Day. Join us at the club for some fine Irish fare and a little karaoke. Loyalist*s karaoke crown is up for grabs as last year*s champion will not be able to defend the title. We will hold our celebration on Friday, March 19 during the usual pub night hours. Reserve your table as soon as possible to avoid disappointment on that day.

Following St. Patrick*s Day we return to the foods of the world with a quick visit to Mexico. Mexican has always been my favorite type of food and I know Jason will put together a world class menu. Again, sign up with myself or Jenn to ensure you get a table.

Just a quick reminder to everyone, that if the golf course opens before April 1, the restaurant will not resume daily operations until April 1. I*ll always be around though if you*d like a beer after the round, and Chef Jason will be ready with something to warm your belly. Here*s hoping!

From the Chef…….

It is almost spring, but first we must celebrate St Patrick*s Day! It*s one of my favourite days to celebrate so don*t miss out. We are going to cook up some authentic Irish fare with live karaoke. We will be celebrating St. Paddy*s Day on Friday March 19. Don*t forget to wear your authentic green shirts and hats as there will be some prizes for the best dressed.

Food of the World has been a great success, and it could only be so with your support. Thank you.

Upcoming events in March are as follows:
Every Friday, Pub Night starts at 5:00pm. Don*t miss out*..

Tuesday, March 9. Come enjoy Hungary*s finest cuisine with your next stop on the map of Food of the World.

Friday, March 19. St. Patrick*s Day with live karaoke.

Tuesday, March 23. *Viva Mexico* on the second last stop of Food of the World. So come and try your favourite Mexican dish.

Chef Jason

Fairways Book Club

Hi everyone. Our April meeting will be April 12 at 2:00 pm at the clubhouse.
The book for discussion will be, “The Art of Racing in the Rain”, by G.Stein.

Marg Campbell will be the facilitator.

Looking forward to seeing you there. Guests are welcome

From the Operations’ Manager

It seems like each month we talk about the weather and this month is no different. After a month like January, where we witnessed record rainfalls and extreme low temperatures, let’s hope February proves to be a little more temperate. There are approximately 73 more days to the start of the golf season!

Management and the various focus groups have been busy during the off season, organizing this year’s events. If you are interested in future event dates, please visit www.loyalistcc.com where a list of Club events will be available. Please keep in mind these dates are subject to change.

Our new membership category, *Restricted*, has been very well received by current members and public (new members) to this point. Currently, there are a few spots remaining in this category and we do expect to reach capacity in the next few weeks. If you are interested in a *Restricted* membership, do not delay. Contact Jenn as soon as possible to avoid being disappointed.

The renovations to the ladie’s washroom is finally complete, and hopefully they meet with everyone’s approval. Visit us on pub night or one of the “Food of The World” stops and check out the improvements.

Mentioned in previous newsletters, the coyote population continues to grow, and with that the food availability continues to decline. A warning to everyone; be cautious where and when you exercise your pets and try to avoid remote areas after dark. Some of the coyotes have been spotted around the clubhouse, and have even been seen near the public school.

In Closing…..from one of our members

A husband takes his wife to play her first game of golf. Of course, the wife promptly hacked her first shot right through the window of the biggest house adjacent to the course.

The husband cringed, I warned you to be careful! Now we’ll have to go up there, find the owner, apologize and see how much your lousy drive is going to cost us. So the couple walked up to the house and knocked on the door.

A warm voice said, “Come on in.” When they opened the door they saw the damage. Glass all over the place, and a broken antique bottle was lying on its side near the broken window.

A man reclining on the couch asked, “Are you the people who broke my window?”
Uh…yeah, sir. We’re sure sorry about that, the husband replied.
Oh, no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank you. You see, I’m a genie, and I’ve been trapped in that bottle for a thousand years. Now that you’ve released me, I’m allowed to grant three wishes.
I’ll give you each one wish, but if you don’t mind and I’ll keep one for myself.
Wow, that’s great the husband said. He pondered a moment then blurted out, I’d like a million dollars a year for the rest of my life.

No problem, said the genie. You’ve got it, it’s the least I can do.

And I’ll guarantee you a long, healthy life. And now you, young lady, what do you want? the genie asked. I’d like to own a gorgeous home complete with servants in every country in the world, she said.

Consider it done, the genie said. And your homes will always be safe from fire, burglary and natural disasters.

And now, the couple asked in unison, what’s your wish, genie?

Well, since I’ve been trapped in that bottle I haven’t been with a woman in more than a thousand years. My wish is to sleep with your wife.

The husband looked at his wife and said, Gee, honey, you know we both now have a fortune, and all those houses. What do you think?

She mulled it over for a few moments and said, You know, you’re right. Considering our good fortune, I guess I wouldn’tmind, but what about you, honey? You know I love you sweetheart, said the husband.

I’d do the same for you. So the genie and the woman went upstairs where they spent the rest of the afternoon well you know, the genie was insatiable.

After about three hours of non-stop fun, the genie rolled over and looked directly into her eyes and asked, How old are you and your husband?

Why, we’re both 35, she responded breathlessly.

Really? Thirty-five years old and both of you still believe in genies?

Jim Burlington

From the F&B…..

We are deep into winter now but spring is in sight! That means it’s time for me to take a few days off and head south for a taste of good weather. I will be gone from February 7 – 18, therefore, any questions or reservations should be made through Jenn at ext. 210 or Jason at ext. 211.

With February set to be a slow month as people travel to and from the sunny south, we have few events scheduled. The Men’s and Ladie’s lunches will proceed as usual with sign-up sheets in both locker rooms.

Note: Due to unexpected participants for men’s and ladie’s lunches, we will be adding a $3.00 surcharge to all members who attend the lunches without signing up or contacting Jenn or myself. The hope is that this will discourage people from arriving unannounced leaving chef Jason in a difficult position.

“Food of the World” continues in February with a trip to the Southern USA. Look for menus posted throughout the clubhouse and sign up with Jenn or myself before February 22. With the success of the last two trips, we have had to relocate to the ballroom to allow for everyone to attend. Well Done!

From the Chef…….

Greetings Everyone:

I just want to thank you for attending the *Foods of the World* and Pub Nights through this blistery cold weather.
Our next stops are the Southern U.S.A. and Hungary, two areas which I have had lots of cooking experience. My mother taught me many different recipes from these areas, as well as the significance of cooking from scratch. With her knowledge I just kept on cooking……

Chef Jason

Food for thought:
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.
Henry Thoreau

Healthy Heart

Healthy Hearts are hard at work at Loyalist and thus far over 1,700 workouts have been undertaken by the 105 registrants. There appears to be some earlier departures for the South and no doubt our milder winter has presented other conflicting activities. Nevertheless, attendance numbers are very close to previous years and a number of individuals continue to demonstrate their commitment to being active and their efforts are worthy of recognition.
Hats off to Penny Chianelli, a team leader, who has again this year attained perfect attendance. The following are in the top 10, attending in excess of 80% of the sessions: John Adams, John Berezny, Marg Campbell, Jack Donaghy, Bruce Friesen, Joyce Friesen, Cherie Gazarek, Art Keir, Ian McClure and Gord Stockley. Well done folks and keep up the good work.

Hopefully my quick review of the attendance book has not missed anyone.
Group sizes will start to shrink as more members look to escape the last of winter by heading South, although reports reveal it has not been all that great in areas like Myrtle Beach. So, if you decide to stay home and have not previously been involved with the Healthy Heart group, there is plenty of room in most time slots. It is as simple as filling out a registration form with Jenn and we will get you moving.

Happy New Year and welcome to 2010!

2009 is gone and it proved to be a great year. Surely 2010 will be even better.
I hope everyone has had a great holiday season.

Those who attended the New Year’s Eve party were treated to an extraordinary evening, with Chef Jason creating an incredible four-course meal. The camaraderie, enjoyment and positive atmosphere of the evening was unbelievable. Well done Jason and thank you to all those who participated.

As the New Year begins, you will note an addition to our clubhouse facility. Located directly inside the north entrance door is our new *defibrillator*. Avery special thanks to Joe Ryan and Mitch Fenton for their generosity, donating this to the club and the community. Two very special members. Thank you from everyone.

January, for those of us brave enough to remain here, will mark the beginning of the *Food of the World Tour*. Be sure to check out our first destination and contact Dave to make a reservation and avoid being disappointed.

Now a couple *public service notes*.

Posted on the clubhouse bulletin board you will note a story regarding the current excessive coyote/wild dog population. This holds very true to our community especially the golf course, clubhouse, and residential community. A word of caution when walking in the evening, especially if you are walking your pets; these animals are all fighting for a reduced food population and become quite aggressive when starved. Walking in pairs with a walking stick (or large gun!) or a defensive weapon, as well as a cell phone is not a bad idea. Please, as posted, do not walk on the course especially the north nine; coyotes have been in the area of the maintenance shop and the compost area.

In closing
After a particularly bad round of golf, Len decided not to go to the nineteenth hole [the clubhouse bar] and started to go straight home.
As he was walking to the golf car park to get his Range Rover, a policeman stopped him and asked, *Did you tee-off on the seventeenth hole about twenty minutes ago?
“Yes”, Len answered. Did you happen to slice your ball so that it went over the trees and out of bounds and completely off the golf course?
Yes, I did. How did you know? Len questioned.
Well, said the policeman gravely, Your golf ball flew out onto the main road and crashed through the windscreen of a BMW. The car driver lost control and crashed into six other cars and a fire engine. The fire engine was unable to reach the fire in time and the building burned down. Now, what do you intend to do about it?
Len thought it over very carefully and responded, I think I’ll close my stance a little bit, tighten my grip and lower my right thumb.
Jim Burlington

From the F&B…….

Happy New Year!! Thanks to everyone who came out and supported our New Year*s Eve dinner at the club. Chef Jason prepared a fantastic and diverse meal that appealed to everyone, and our D.J., Rebecca, helped bring in the New Year in style. Now we can begin to cheat on all those resolutions we’ve made for 2010.

December had some very memorable moments, highlighted by our second edition of Celebrity Chef. Sal Gelsomino had 80 people enjoying a little taste of Italy with his exceptional meal on December 13. His lasagna and pork cutlet left all the guests with full stomachs AND take out containers. We are still accepting nominees for the third installment. Contact Jason or myself if you wish become our next celebrity chef!

The New Year will see the return of our very successful, ‘Foods of the World’. After the cooking lesson Chef Jason got from Sal, he has decided to start with his own version of the *Tastes of Italy*. Menus are posted throughout the clubhouse and the dinner will be held on January 12 between 5:00 and 8:00pm. Sign-up with me at ext. 214. or with Jenn at ext. 210. Other dates for *Foods of the World* are January 26, February 23, March 9, March 23 and April 13. Any members attending the first five events will receive a 50% discount on the last stop.

Pub nights will resume on January 15. There will be no Food & Beverage service until January 11, as we undergo some upgrades in the kitchen to help us provide quicker, more efficient service.

From the Chef…….

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

I want to thank everyone who came out to the New Year*s Eve party at the Club and celebrated with us. It was very enjoyable to put together a menu that catered to everyone*s taste. It was a wonderful night full of good food, good company and good cheer, and I wish everyone the best in the New Year.

A special thank you goes out to Sal who made the second *Celebrity Chef* so much fun. It was great to be a part of it. It*s also great to be in the kitchen with someone else who enjoys cooking as much as I do. Being a chef means learning something new all the time and Sal certainly showed me a few of Italy*s secrets. I look forward to using them in our upcoming *Food of the World* on January 12, when I introduce my Italian menu. Keep your eyes on the bulletin boards around the Club as I will be posting menus periodically for our upcoming *Food of the World* events.

Back to Celebrity Chef..
After two VERY successful events, I find that I have no one volunteering to be involved in the third installment. With a community as diverse as Loyalist I know there are people who are able to create a great meal. Since modesty seems to be taking over, I ask that you bring forth names of potential Chef*s to me personally. All nominators will remain anonymous****until their chef gets a standing ovation! Contact me at ext. 211.

Chef Jason

The Pro Shop………

Welcome to the New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday season.
We are currently going through the ordering process for our new pro-shop
merchandise for 2010. There are some new and exciting lines in both Men*s and
Ladies* clothing coming in the new year. We are currently finalizing a fashion
show for theladies with our Lopez/Antigua sales rep. Once again, all club
sales and fittings will be handled by our Head Teaching Professional, John
Boyle. There will be a Titleist/Cobra fitting day early on in the season. I
will have more information pertaining to the pro-shop towards the end of
February, including the new On-Line t-time reservation system.

On a personal note, I would like to thank everyone for a great year at
Loyalist. I have never been at a club where the members take such an
interest in club activities. The number of volunteers who get involved from
the Mid-Am, all the way to decorating the clubhouse at Christmas is
absolutely amazing. I have truly felt at home here and thank you all for
making my first year unbelievable.

I look forward to seeing some of the snowbirds in Myrtle Beach this March
getting out for a game or two. I will be corresponding mainly with Ron Lacey,
so if you would like to get a game in drop him a line. I chose the Myrtle
Beach area this year as I have to get my confidence back. I believe the
Hippy is in Florida so I will be staying away from there.

Once again thank you for everything and I am looking forward to more great
things this year.
Geoff James

Reminder
Golf Course is now Closed
Check out the monthly calendar for any up coming events

It is almost that time of the year and Loyalist Country Club and all the staff would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
It was an interesting season to say the least, and the longest in history here at Loyalist.

At this time, some late breaking news. Keith has decided to take paternity leave and we are lucky enough to have a capable individual to take over duties as our Food and Beverage Manager – Dave Noll. If you have any requirements, need to make a reservation, or just want to wish Dave the best, he can be reached at ext. 214.

December will be an exciting month with many events and opportunities for you to enjoy your club. Every Friday evening is pub night, with food and drink specials and an opportunity to win hockey tickets.

December 5 will be the date for this year’s Gift Giving Dinner. Don’t miss this event, it’s an opportunity to help under privileged children through the gift of giving. Enjoy the spirit of the evening with your neighbour, and of course take pleasure in Chef Jason’s creation for the evening.

Last but not least, don’t miss New Year’s Eve, the social committee, Dave and Jason have a spectacular evening planned. Call Jenn to make your reservation early.
As the season draws to a close, our Golf and Social focus groups will be recruiting individuals for the 2010 season. If you are interested please contact Jenn in the office.

In closing:

For those heading out for vacation;
A retired corporate executive, now a widower, decided to take a vacation. He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life, that is, until the ship sank. He soon found himself on an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts.
After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to the shore. In disbelief, he asks, “Where did you come from? How did you get here?”
She replies, “I rowed over from the other side of the island where I had landed when my cruise ship sank.”
“Amazing,” he notes. “You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you.”
“Oh, this thing?” explains the woman. “I made the boat out of some raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm tree branches, and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree.”

“But, where did you get the tools?”

“Oh, that was no problem,” replied the woman. “On the south side of the island, a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock is exposed. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into ductile iron I used that to make tools and used the tools to make the hardware.”
The guy is stunned.
“Let’s row over to my place,” she says. So, after a short time of rowing, she soon docks the boat at a small wharf. As the man looks to shore, he nearly falls off the boat. Before him is a long stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb struck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, “It’s not much, but I call it home. Sit down, please.

“Would you like a drink?
“No! No thank you,” the man blurts out, still dazed. “I can’t take another drop of coconut juice.”
“It’s not coconut juice,” winks the woman. “I have a still. How would you like a Pina Colada?”
Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they exchange their individual stories, the woman announces, “I’m going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There’s a razor in the bathroom cabinet upstairs.”

No longer questioning anything, the man goes upstairs into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet is a razor made from a piece of tortoise bone. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside a swivel mechanism.

“This woman is amazing,” he muses. What’s next?
When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but some small flowers on tiny vines, each strategically positioned, she smelled faintly of gardenias. She then beckons for him to sit down next to her.

“Tell me,” she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, “We’ve both been out here for many months. You must have been lonely. There’s something I’m certain you feel like doing right now, something you’ve been longing for, right?” She stares into his eyes.

He can’t believe what he’s hearing. “You mean…”he swallows excitedly as tears start to form in his eyes,”* ” You’ve built a Golf Course ?????”
Have a great off-season; hope to see you at the club!

It*s official. The golf course is now closed after a beautiful stretch of weather throughout November. It*s time to put the clubs away and get ready for a busy holiday season.

November had many successful events here at the club. Our first *Celebrity Chef*, Greg Burke, did a masterful job in the kitchen preparing his world class ribs. We would like to thank Greg for all his hard work in the kitchen and for showing our great chef Jason a thing or two. Well done. Next up, Sal Gelsomino and his, *Flavours of Italy*, on December 13. Sign-up sheets are located downstairs in the common areas or make a reservation at the bar or with Jenn at ext. 210.

Pub nights are also back in full swing. We have had a tremendous turnout for the first four nights with the Halloween pub night bringing a lot of eccentric and well thought out costumes. Congratulations goes out to the Whitneys for best dressed. They set the bar high and I look forward to seeing next year*s costumes.

November 29 saw our sixth annual Country Christmas brunch become the great success we knew it would be. With a record turnout for the brunch and fantastic displays set up by our vendors, the event went off perfectly. A big thanks from the club goes to Tom and Donna Clifford for stepping into the role of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. They looked and played the part to perfection. Also, thanks to the social committee who helped us to raise over $500 in baked goods sales and donations. The people at Lennox and Addington send their most sincere thank you.

Upcoming events include the Club Christmas Dinner and New Year*s Eve celebrations. All details for New Year*s party will be finalized on December 3, with notices and sign-up sheets going up throughout the clubhouse. The Christmas dinner and gift giving is on the December 5. Sign-up has been slow to date so make sure to contact myself or Jenn to make your reservation. I would hate to see a wonderful event like this cancelled due to a lack of interest. Please check the notice board by the pro-shop to see what age group your present should be directed towards. Let*s all help make some under privileged children*s Christmas a great one.

Finally, a much anticipated poker league has begun at the club. We will be running small tournaments on Sundays at 12:00pm. Jason will have some pub fare ready to go and the taps don*t stop running because the golf course is closed! Contact me at extension 214 if you have any questions.

Thanks from the Food & Beverage team, and we hope everyone has a very happy holiday season.

Greg Burke made a huge discovery that he can bring smiles to the community with his Great Culinary skills*.Thanks a lot for supporting the Celebrity Chef and I hope to see you at the next one on December 13 with Sal Gelsamino.
From The Operations Manager

It seems like only yesterday that we were waiting for the snow to melt, and now we are hoping the snow stays away. Hopefully, October will be warm and sunny with lots of opportunity to golf.

At this time I would like to congratulate the Jones Team on their Loyalist Cup win, and the Sandra Post Team on their victory in the Fall Classic. It proved to be a fun event with many closely contested matches. Not even the rain and cool temperatures could overcome the resolve of the participants.

October 4 will be the 4th Annual Fall Scramble. Don’t be disappointed, sign up early and plan to attend the draw for teams on Friday evening at the club. There will be some dinner and appetizer specials, no to mention a little kibitzing!

With the fall upon us, many will be initialing their garden closure for the season. Again, this year, Thursdays will be pick-up day for compostable materials. These materials must be contained in a bio-degradable bag and left at curb side. Please, no branches!

Mark October 23 on your calendar, because this is the date for the closing dinner and awards. As always, Chef Jason will have a special menu planned and join us to congratulate all our winners for this season.

As this season draws to a close, preparations are under way for the 2010 season. The fall golf rates have been released for next year. The CCC rates for 2010, hopefully, will be available soon. It is our intent to host the CCC Annual General Meeting in October again this season. Watch for the notice to be posted soon as well as emailed to those on our email list.

The “golfing season” will officially end October 31. Please take an opportunity to stop by the office and pick up your “Loyalist Loyally Golf Passes” valid from November 1, 2009 to April 14, 2010. Thanks again for all your support!

If you do plan on leaving for the sunny south or do not plan on playing during this period, please inform Jenn. Remember, these passes are non-transferrable.

In closing…

A wealthy old lady decided to go on a photo safari in Africa, taking her faithful elderly poodle named Cuddles along for company.

One day, the old poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, Cuddles realises that he’s lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old poodle thinks, “Oh, oh! I’m in deep doo-doo now!” Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the old poodle exclaims loudly, “Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?”

Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-stride, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. “Whew,” says the leopard, “that was close! That old poodle nearly had me!”

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up.

The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of, and says “Here, monkey, hop on my back and watch what’s going to happen to that conniving canine!”

Now, the poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, “What am I going to do now?”, but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says “Where’s that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!”

The moral of this story is… don’t mess with old farts… age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery. Bullshit and brilliance only come with age and experience.

Hello Everyone!

It’s hard to believe fall golf is upon us already. It seemed like the opening of the club was yesterday. Here’s everything you need to know about the closing dates.

I would like to thank everyone who came out to support our Casino Night. The night was a huge success due primarily to the efforts of Dianne Nolting and Norma Ferguson of the social committee, as well as all of their volunteers who helped with pictures, props and games.

Thanks also to everyone who came out every month to support the Mens and Ladies Leagues, as well as the Mixed and Couples Golf. A special thanks to all the members who volunteer their time to organize golf and dinners for everyone:

Don Goodridge and Pat Kennedy from the Mens League

Nancy Wilkie and Lynn Green from the Ladies League

Pep and Mireille Fraser, Bill Steiner and Sheena Lee from Mixed Golf

Sue and Mike Bullock from Couples Golf

It was great working with everyone, and I look forward to working with the new leaders who will be coordinating these events next year.

The Mixed and Couples have already held their closing dinners, but you can still sign up for the last Men’s Lunch on October 13 or the final Ladies Lunch on October 8.

I hope everyone had fun at this year’s Loyalist Cup and I extend my congratulations to Jim Burlington’s Bobby Jones team, and Ella Hillier’s Sandra Post team for taking the honours this year.

In spit of the fact that cool weather has arrived, we still have lots going on at the club. Join us on October 4 for the annual Fall Scramble. Dress warm for some fun on the course, then head inside to warm up with a hot drink and Jason’s Pasta Buffet for dinner. Sign up in the Pro Shop.

We hope to see everyone out on October 23 for the annual Closing Dinner and Awards presentation. We have some great choices this year for dinner. If you’re trying to eat healthy, Chef Jason is preparing fresh Red Snapper and I’m sure you will really enjoy it. If you prefer something a little more traditional, then I suggest the Chef’s Prime Rib, AAA Canadian beef, cooked to perfection and served with Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings. Contact Jenn in the main office (613-352-5152, ext 210) to sign up and indicate your meal choices.

I’m hoping no one has forgotten about Pub Night? That’s good because we’re going to begin again on Friday, October 30. Since it’s the day before Hallowe’en, feel free to dress up. We’ll make sure there are some prizes for the best dressed. We will also be giving away some tickets to the Kingston Frontenacs and once a month there will be tickets given away to see the Ottawa Senators. So come out on Friday nights starting at five o’clock and have a few pints of Labatt’s to increase your chances to win and meet up with the gang for some fall fun.

From the Chef…

Hey everyone, I hope you enjoyed yourselves at the Loyalist Cup/Fall Classic, particularly the meal that was chosen. I would like to extend my appreciation and thanks to all the people involved in organizing the Loyalist Cup. It was an experience of a lifetime and a challenge for me as well. I’ve been struggling the last month to get a round of golf in, and my game really showed that. Haha!

Pub Night is coming soon and hopefully many will join us for the 3rd season of Pub Nights every Friday night, beginning October 30. It will be a special evening so come out and join in. Dress up for Halloween and I’m sure there’s a special treat for everyone.

Thank you everyone for the great season.

Recipe of the Month

Chili Con Carne

2lb of lean ground beef *Healthy Choice*
2 green peppers and 2 red peppers, diced
1 large Spanish onion, diced
4 tbsp garlic
3 cans of kidney beans
8 tbsp Mexican Chili Powder
4 tbsp ground cumin
¼ cup Frank’s Hot Sauce
1 can black beans
2 pints mushrooms, sliced thinly
2 tsp canola oil
2 cans diced plum tomatoes
1 large can Ragu Marinara

This is easy, Mr. Krauss. Even you can do it!

Add the beef and brown with the onion and garlic. Add peppers and mushrooms after beef is brown with the Canola oil. Sautée until done and then drain the fat.

Now put sautéed ingredients in a crock pot. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until well blended. Cook for 4½ hours and you have the Chef’s Homemade Chili that you can buy by the bowlful at the bar for $4.00 when you get a little chilly on the turn.

Chili will be available only until October 31.

From the Pro Shop

With fall officially upon us, the best part of the golf season, in my opinion, is finally here. Fall golf not only brings us a backdrop of beautiful colours to take our minds off a bad game, but the course remains in excellent condition due to the tireless work of our talented grounds crew, led by Scott Fraser.

As the cooler weather approaches, the deals in the Pro Shop start to heat up. Stop by the Pro Shop and take advantage of our FootJoy Outerwear blowout! While quantities, last, all FootJoy shirts and outerwear have been reduced by 50% (CCC discount does not apply). All other shirts are now Buy One, Get One 50% Off. While inventories remain, all shoes are 25% off.

Congratulations to Captain Jim Burlington and his victorious Bobby Jones team for their victory in the Loyalist Cup. The Sandra Post team, led by Ella Hillier, was also victorious in the Ladies Fall Classic. A big thank you from the Pro Shop to all participants, the volunteer team led by Ken Morris and a special Thank You from Dan and Chris to Paige Esford for her work in the Pro Shop over the weekend!

We hope to see everyone at our last members event of the year, the Fall Scramble, which takes place on Sunday, October 4. The draw for teams for this event will take place Friday, Oct 2 at 5pm in the ballroom – see you there!

Enjoy what’s left of a great golf season!

Men’s Golf Report

As my two year commitment comes to an end in October, I would like to thank all of those people who have helped make our Mens group so successful.

To past Executives with whom I have worked over the past five years and to this year’s group – Guy Gosselin, Tom Clifford Sam Sawyer, Ken Morris, Bill Steiner, Nick Chapman, Murray Halliday, Pieter Kooiman, George Krauss, Len Dzierniejko, Gary Tackaberry, Rick Chiarandini, Barry Knox and our Vice-Captain Pay Kennedy, my deepest appreciation for your involvement, commitment and support.

I would like to thank our GAO Representative, Dale Henderson, and our Handicap Chair, John Nicholl.

From a personal perspective, I would like to acknowledge two former Captains with whom I worked, Barry Casey and Bob Murray. I value very much their sound advice and more importantly their friendship.

To all the Loyalist staff, and I mean ALL, you have helped make our Mens golf successful. To Jim Burlington, I value very much our many conversations and your help and support. While there are aspects of the golf operation we have had issues with, you have always had an open door, and in fact have been more than supportive of our efforts.

To Keith and Jason and your staff – the lunches have worked, and the keg is now part of our culture.

To Jennifer, you have been a welcome addition to our golf club. Thank you for all your help.

I especially would like to thank the outdoor staff – the back-shop folks, the “grounds crew” and even our Marshalls, Paul, Mike and Ron.

Our goal has been to provide a non-politicized golf environment that is conducive to fair play, good sportsmanship and strong fellowship. I believe that we have accomplished that goal.

Reminder, keep putting in your scores and mark on your calendar the following:

Team Championship Event, October 6

Final Men’s Lunch, October 13

Finally, to my friend and colleague, Pat Kennedy, thank you for your willingness to be our Captain for the next two years. We are indeed fortunate to have a person of your quality and integrity.

Couples Golf

On September 21, we held our 5th and final Couples Day Golf this year and Mother Nature again provided us with a superb day for golf. Afterwards we were served another delicious meal starting with Greek salad, followed by superb roast turkey with potatoes and veggies and all the trimmings. We were then treated to a special dessert of fruit pies and cheesecake by Chef Jason.

We have had a season of great food at the Club and our gratitude goes out to Jason, Keith, Dave and all the staff for making our Couples Golf days a huge success.

Thanks to Sue for all the work she did including computer related tasks, meal arrangements, special gifts and collecting cash on each day. Also, thanks to Sam Sawyer for producing the labels for the score cards.

Birthday wishes and a card and small gift were given to Anne Roxburgh who celebrated her birthday on September 29. This produced an outburst of birthday calls covering the rest of the year! Also recognized was Sheri Wenzi for walking the course on Monday as she was unable to play golf due to a recurring side injury and an appropriate gift was duly awarded – a set of small very light-weight clubs! Both Sheri and Berno were also congratulated for getting their picture in the local paper for the local Winery… some people will do anything for a free bottle of wine.

Cash prizes were handed out to everyone who equaled or exceeded their points target and special gifts were awarded to Bev Underhill and Rick Chiarandini. Mike and Sue also gave their own awards to those who participated in all Couple Golf days this year and the draw was won by Anne Jukes-Hughes and Ian Roxburgh.

Many thanks to Chris in the Pro Shop for the incentive awards which were won by Andree Casey, Joan Wray, Alexandra Webb, Bob Wray and Jack Beresford.

We are pleased to announce that Rick and Sheila Chiarandini will be taking over the reins and organizing the Couples Golf next supper – thank you for stepping up to the plate. We want to thank everyone who has supported us this year to make Couples Golf so successful – we have certainly enjoyed organizing it and wish everyone good health and happy golfing next year, not to mention have a great fall and winter, wherever you might be.

Ladies Fall Classic

This year 24 ladies took part in the 6th annual Fall Classic. We had a number of first-time participants who discovered that match play can be fun and hope to see them in the seasonal match play as well as back again next year. The first day we have perfect weather that led to a lot of great matches and ended up with some interesting pictures from Mike and Elaine, and a tie with each team garnering three points. Day Two started off with reasonable weather but was downright chilly by the time we finished with the Sandra Post team ahead 6-5.

Sunday started off with a light rain that didn’t dampen the spirits of our intrepid golfers. On the back nine we had drier weather but that didn’t help the Lorie Kane team who came up short, losing 11 to 13. Many thanks to our captains, “Courageous” Shirley Egerton and Ella Hillier who dealth with the ups and downs of the event but always kept us on track.

Everyone looked elegant in the great uniforms we had this year. I think some of the men were a tiny bit jealous, as we gathered for a fantastic supper and the trophy presentation.

Thank you to all who made this another terrific year for the Fall Classic.

Since the last newsletter, the Men’s “B” team visited Cataraqui on September 13, and on the following day the Men’s Senior team hosted visitors from Camden Braes and Gananoque. It seems 2009 was Loyalist’s year to yield second place finishes and all four teams had similar outcomes. With the Intersectional competitions, the winning club in each section of four clubs moves to a higher section, and the club with the fewest points moves down a level. Consequently, our teams will remain in their current categories in 2010. Detailed results have been posted on the GAO bulletin board downstairs by the handicap computer, but we would like to acknowledge the following who earned maximum points by winning all of their matches. Congratulations and well done!

Men’s B: Joe Sauer, Keith MacVicar
Seniors: Sandy McBride, Alan Carrick, Rudy Gazarek

Many thanks to Sheila Chiarandini and Ron Lacey who acted as coordinators for the Women’s and Men’s divisions respectively. We look forward to the competition again next year.

Healthy Heart

With some signs of Fall appearing, there have been some enquiries as to when the fall/winter exercise program will be starting. The plan is to being early in November and registration forms are now available at the office. Check with Jenn.

For the benefit of newcomes to Loyalist, the Healthy Heart program came into existence seven years ago and is a replica of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program operated at Hotel Dieu, other hospitals, YMCAs and exercise facilities in Ontario. The program at Loyalist is open exclusively to Country Club Communities’ members.

Last year we had over 100 participants, working in groups of 10-12. The group sessions are three times weekly with each daily session lasting one hour and 20 minutes. Focus is on cardio exercises, strengthening and stretching. Each group works with a team leader, and we have been very fortunate in maintaining continuity with the leaders year after year. If anyone is interested in being a Group Leader, please indicate so on the registration form.

All participants, including previous members, are required to complete a 2009/2010 Registration and Waiver Form. The form provides and acknowledgement of personal responsibility for participating, and encourages members to review the program with their personal physician before registering. This form also provides the opportunity to record time and day preferences and is essential for planning the groups and times. We have always attempted to acknowledge preferences and keep groups intact. However, this must be dependent upon numbers, and the number of new members joining.

Please arrange to register as soon as possible.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call me at (613) 352-4134.

Bridge is in trouble!

Over the summer, I had to struggle every Tuesday to get ONE table for Wednesday. I also had, and still have, trouble to get a person to take over when I am sick or out of town. I am hoping that people will return to bridge once the golf season is over. We usually have three to four tables in the winter. I need help!

Please call me if you can help to share the load. It would be a shame if we had to discontinue the Wednesday afternoon bridge. I started it 11 years ago.

Golf Focus Group

Mission and Objectives
Form a committee of volunteer local members and key management personnel to collectively identify, discuss, recommend and influence a wide variety of golf course related matters and issues.

<span class bold>Benefits
For golfers, it provides a great opportunity to get a detailed appreciation and education of golf course operations and maintenance procedures, and provide an avenue to raise concerns and potentially influence change.

For management, it provides expanded monitoring of what is happening on the golf course. A powerful and actionable feedback mechanism.

Focus group members include: Jim Burlington, Geoff James, Greg Hopps, Frank Feld, Greg Burke, Ron Lacey, Graham Watts, Dale Henderson, Len Dzierniejko, Vernanne Ahern, Sheena Lee, Sheila Chiarandini, Ian McClure, George Krauss.

Format
The group had four outings which included golf and inspecting the golf course, followed by a meeting to review findings. Documentation of meetings was in the form of a detailed living action plan with assigned primes and due dates. This document is posted for public viewing on the bulletin board behind the GAO handicap computer.

Accomplishments
Highlights include the following, in no particular order.

Course Duties versus Golfer Needs/Protocol
This was an area of repeated discussion and resulted in the following: early identification and correction of concerns related to evidence, and the perception that staff is oblivious of the need to respect play in progress. High influx of new annual staff requires detailed and repeated education of golfer protocol. Incidents were reviewed and over time noticeable improvements were observed.

At the same time, golfer respect of staff is also expected. There are minimal daylight hours to complete all tasks and eventually golfers will integrate with golf course activities. Golfers are requested to exercise understanding and patients to allow staff to complete a pass and move from line of sight (especially fairway and greens mowers). Machines will not be turned off but idled down.

All staff is expected to wear safetyl approved cap inserts and foot protection. Individuals are expected to face golfers and spot ball flight. Group workers will have a designated spotter.

Discussion took place as to why golf course staff do not work backwards and into golfers. There are very good reasons for this:

Principle of course readiness is to achieve optimum course conditions from the beginning of the round.

The back-nine housing community will complain about the noise early in the morning.

If duties are completed to standard in most situations no “same group of workers” should follow “the same set golfers”.

Green Side Bunkers
Identified playability problems including drainage issues, influenced maintenance related changes to raking procedures and numerous costly bunker rebuilds. We welcome the arrival of expensive Ohio white sand to enhance playability and appearance.

Fairway Bunkers
Identified playability issues to ensure standards maintained and deficiencies corrected.

Local Rule for Bunker Play
Ongoing concern of small stones and rocks resulted in management accepting and adopting committee suggested local rule to remove the stones and rocks without penalty.

Impact of the Environment and Weather Conditions on Golf Course Conditions
The committee appreciated getting an understanding of the numerous weather-related obstacles staff must contend with to counter disease, drought and insect damange. The process of green and fairway restoration to curb these challenges are really an act of perseverance and patience.

Repairing of Ball Marks
This is an area of constant reminder to golfers to take ownership for repairing own ball marks and others on a continual basis.

Course Staking
Committee recommendations followed by GAO rulings resulted in numerous positive changes to staking of hazards and out-of-bounds areas.

Course Yardage
GAO conducted course mapping and produced yardage books for the Bid-Amateur Tournament. This information will allow verification and re-stenciling of sprinkler heads and other yardage markers.

Benches
Appropriate benches were repaired and all were stained. Two new benches look great against the backdrop of a newly stained washroom on hole #14.

Pace of Play
Ten minute tee times have produced favourable results for management and the golfer experience.

Geese
Scully does seven runs a day with the intent of discouraging their presence. This continues to be an ongoing battle.

Cart Paths
New product was installed in and around particular housing areas and known washout location. This special recycled asphalt dusting has led to great success.

Club House Interlocking Sidewalk
Uneven stones have been identified and leveled.

Ball Washers
A routine of checking and changing water/soap every three weeks has been adopted.

Trees, Brushes, Trimming, Grass Clippings, Refuge Dumping
The committee-identified areas of concern were corrected, resulting in the feeling of dead trees, improving line of sight concerns and playability issues out of deep fescue. Dumping of grass clippings and refuge near ball landing areas was identified and staff educated accordingly.

Hospitality Cart
Provision of a hospitality cart on Hole #10 for golfers to visit the clubhouse is viewed as a favorable gesture and the cart is used frequently.

Algae in Ponds
The ongoing battle appears to have generated some positive results, thanks to the efforts of Scott Fraser. The pond on Hole #17 has never looked better, however, it should be noted that this situation is an ongoing battle as various elements are at play to cause this.

Rain Shelter
The long range plan is to have a rain shelter built at the green on hole #5. Community volunteers have come forward to help build the shelter to curb costs. This plan is still very much on the priority list going forward.

Scorecard Handicap Rating of Holes
It has been suggested that the marking of holes is outdated and requires a statistical validation. A committee has been formed and will investigate and conform or correct in time for next season.

Telephone Access
It has been suggested to have a phone installed (local access restricted) downstairs by the handicap computer.

Club Cleaning Brushes on the Range
They are worn out and will be replaced.

Beverage Cart
Suggestions were presented and adopted for increased signage, marketing of products and procedural changes to enhance sales.

Loyalist Cup

A strong showing by the defending champs resulted in a three-day sweep by the Bobby Jones team lead by Captain Jim Burlington. The Mickelson squad, headed by Gary Tackaberry, gained momentum each day but came up an little short overall and within a ½ point on the final day. With teams being expanded to 16 members this year, there were 48 points at stake on Day Three, featuring Single Match Play. Geoff James, new in the Captain’s chair, is reassessing his strategy and can hardly wait for next year.

The weather forecase was not particularly enticing but Mother Nature cooperated pretty well and we only experienced periods of rain on Day Three.

Fifteen players experienced their first participation with the Loyalist Cup and based on comments received, there is little doubt they will be back.

Special thanks is extended to Mike Kerr and Elaine Jackson for the fine camera work which enabled us to revisit some of the moments of the weekend via a slide show during Sunday dinner.

The smiles and laughter captured in the many scenes certainly showcased everyone having fun working away on this game we call golf. The “pics” also illustrated what a superb facility we have to enjoy and many tributes were passed along to the entire staff of Loyalist Country Club.

Gaining in popularity, despite the weather being a little off, was the gathering around the Score Board on the 18th hole along with the up-to-date results being provided by volunteer scorers. Many thanks to Ken Morris, Anne & Nick Chapman, Don Garland, Bill Steiner and Sheena Lee who looked after the leader board and provided some much appreciated and timely spotting. There were many compliments on the “stuffed pork loin” dinner and on behalf of all participants we extend our thanks to Chef Jason, Keith and the entire kitchen and serving staff. And of course, thanks to all the players. We look forward to the competition next year.

Loyalist Junior Program Update

October 1st marked the end of a very successful season for our inaugural Junior Program. The program was targeted at not only expanding our junior membership here at loyalist, but also aimed to introduce the game of golf to children, grandchildren and relatives of Loyalist members through free lessons offered by myself, Geoff James, Chris Abbott and Dan Geran.

Over the course of the season, you may have noticed or participated in fundraising efforts for Junior Golf and Loyalist. We thank you very much for your support this past season. The money raised from these events has gone towards sending our junior members to local Junior Tournaments on the St. Lawrence and CJGA schedules. It is our hope next season to use some of the money raised in these efforts to offset the membership costs for underprivileged children in our area. We look forward to your continued support.

The Loyalist Juniors would like to tahnk all who have contributed to a great 2009 season, but a special thanks to Dr Sam Meban, Jim Burlington, Frederick Sutherland, and Greg Burke.

We are looking forward to another great season in 2010!

The final Mixed Golf for this year was played under sunny skies with a nice breeze on September 14. Sixty golfers played a version of step-aside scramble, with the high handicappers playing off the yellow tee boxes, which appeared to work very well. Sixty-two folks attended teh excellent served dinner of salad, pork loin, potatoes and veggies; followed by coffee/tea and a delicious cheese cake, which was prepared by our Head Chef, Jason Beaudoin.

From The Operations Manager

Hard to believe that summer is almost over and fall will soon be upon us. The fabulous fall colours will hopefully bring warm weather with no rain.

We hosted many successful events through August, with the highlights of the month being the Parent Child Championship and the Corn Roast.

Rudy Gazarek and his committee of volunteers created an interesting event that surpassed everyone’s expectations. The participation this year was more than triple of any other year. A job well done, Rudy.

The Corn Roast was the last of our three backyard parties which attracted over 180 guests. Chef Jason and his staff served a fabulous dinner offering a choice of steak or lobster and seasonal favorites. The change, by the social focus group, to three partially sponsored events versus one, was an overwhelming success. Albeit there were some skeptics initially, the participation of more than 500 guests to the three events speaks volumes, with our participation up by 30%, not to mention all the funds raised for various charities. Well done all!

September will see us hosting the final Men’s Night, and with the current trend there will be in excess of $1,000 up for grabs in the “Chase the Ace”. Don’t miss out on your chance to win.

Also, on September 25th will be the ever popular “Casino Night”. Don’t miss an opportunity to enjoy an evening of fun, food and possibly even win a prize.

The Loyalist Cup and Fall Classic will be contested September 24-27. If you are not playing or involved, feel free to come out and root for your favorite team.

Look for the posting for the “Fall Scramble”. It will be held on October 4 and signup will be in the Pro Shop.

In closing…

Off the seventh tee, Brian sliced his shot deep into a wooded ravine. He took his eight iron and clambered down the embankment in search of his lost ball.

After many long minutes of hacking at the underbrush, he spotted something glistening in the leaves. As he drew nearer, he discovered it was an eight iron in the hands of a skeleton!

Brian immediately called out to his friend, “Jack, I’ve got trouble down here!”

“What’s the matter?” Jack asked from the edge of the ravine.

“Bring me my wedge,” Brian shouted, “you can’t get out of here with an eight iron.”

F&B

Hello Everyone!

It’s hard to believe the summer has gone and fall golf is almost upon us. Although the summer wasn’t as hot as we would have liked, the events at the club are just heating up.

I would like to thank Ted Padley and his band again for raising over $1,700 for prostate cancer, and a special thanks to all of you for supporting such a great cause.

This season’s Family Classic was a great success, and we are hoping to grow the next event even more in 2010.

We would also like to thank Peggi Fuller and Ann Jukes-Hughes, the co-chairs who worked very hard on the Maritime night and corn roast. The Glenora Gang was great and I’m sure you will all see more of them during the winter months over a Pub Night or two.

Mostly we would like to thank all of the CCC members who supported all three summer events. We had over 175 people at each event. Thank you again for your continued support – without you, they wouldn’t be possible.

Looking ahead to September, we have some really great events planned including our second Casino Night. It will be held September 25th at the clubhouse. Come by for a freat dinner prepared by Chef Jason and stay around for some charity gaming action. Pit boss Gary Tackaberry will keep his eye on things around the tables, and say a special thanks to Dianne Nolting and Norma Ferguson who were the social committee chairpersons for this event. All the money is going to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Sign up in the main office with Jenn, and please wear red and white that night as a show of support for our charity.

September also brings the Fall Classic, the biggest tournament of the year for us and of course that means it’s Loyalist Cup time. This year the tournament will be held from September 23 for the opening ceremonies and the first draw, and the golf will be played on September 24, 26 and 27. Cheer on your favorite team and come down to the club for all the festivities.

We look forward to a great month, and October will bring the closing dinner to be held on the 16th. After that, the Pub Night returns. More details will follow.

Hope to see everyone try out the new items on our Summer menu. The new salad on the menu is Jim Burlington’s favorite and does it ever taste great. Also, let’s not overlook the MacVicar Whistle Dog… it’s an 11am favorite for Keith.

So come on out after your round, or just for dinner and try one of your favorite dishes.

Men’s Golf Report

August has come to a close and I’m happy to report that we have had a wonderful golf season with more excitement and enthusiasm to come.

Our competitions are in their final stage and I wish all those golfers good luck, play well and hit them straight.

What a strange season this has been! The wet weather continues to “hang around”, but on a positive note the fall’s forecast is warm and sunny.

Despite the looming thunderstorms, the backyard party “went on” and was an overwhelming success. Chef Jason created a great feast that was thoroughly enjoyed by all and those who participated in the silent and live auctions enjoyed a few deals. As usual a great job by all our staff and dedicated volunteers!

July proved to be a busy month with many club golf events. The Shewfelt’s, with the help of the Henderson*s, hosted the Mr/Mrs event. This proved to be an overwhelming success with our largest crowd ever of over 40 couples. With *Masters* tickets on the line as well as many outstanding prizes, the crowd was a buzz the entire evening, Chef Jason and his staff prepared an amazing “surf and turf” dinner to everyone’s immense pleasure. We are especially grateful to the Shewfelt’s for their incredible donation of their personal Masters tickets.

The Club Championship was also contested during July with several competitive flights. Congratulations to all of this season*s participants, regardless of your individual outcome, the club was pleased to field a record number of participants in this event. Special thanks to all our volunteers. Winners will be noted later in the newsletter and will receive their accolades at the closing dinner and awards.

In case you haven’t noticed, this season the constant theme for every event has been record breaking numbers. The participation, positive feed back and general enthusiasm we are experiencing has been refreshing and welcome. Pat yourself on the back! The atmosphere that separates Loyalist from all other venues is people enjoying their club!

August will also be a busy month, with the Parent/Child Classic being played on the 9th. Don*t forget to sign up early in the pro shop, in order to enjoy a fun-filled day hosted by Rudy Gazarek and his committee.

During the remainder of the season you will find a cart parked at “the turn” from the 9th green to 10th tee. As posted, this cart has been designated as a “hospitality cart” intended for the use of our members and guests to travel to the clubhouse and back. This initiative was demonstrative of our golf focus group and we presume will be well received by many of our players.

In closing…

Lady Luck was seldom kind to Len. Although Len had a real zest for life he was constantly beset by bad luck.
He loved poker but poker did not love him; he played the stock market with great anticipation but always seemed to be the one who bought high and sold low.

His life seemed to be full of more downs than ups.

His greatest delight was his golf game. Not that Len was a great golfer; in fact, he never managed to break 100, but the odd shot that somehow ended up in the general area he had in mind was enough to keep his hopes alive.

Finally, Len became ill and passed away. But just before he died, he asked that his remains be cremated and his ashes be scattered just off the fairway on the ninth hole of his home course.

Accordingly, a gathering assembled to carry out Len’s wishes. It was a bright sunny day and all was going well. Then, as the ashes were being strewn…. a gust of wind came up and… blew Len out of bounds.

Hello Everyone!

Well the dog days of summer are upon us, another month of great events is behind us, with a lot more to come.

I would like to start off by thanking everyone who came out to the backyard party and supported the Heart & Stroke Foundation by buying 50/50 tickets and purchasing items from the silent and live auction. Together we raised over $500.00.

I would also like to thank Ted Padley and his band Killing Time for playing on July 31st. These guys were generous enough to donate their time and all of the money raised will go directly to prostate cancer research. Special thanks to all of you folks for coming out and supporting this event as the proceeds are going to a great cause.

We have our August Maritime corn roast well underway and we invite everyone to come out again and help raise more money for a great cause. This will be a choice dinner for everyone, so please come into the office, and sign up with Jennifer, and make your dinner choices. It’s $9.99 for a steak dinner and $14.99 for a lobster dinner. We will also have local fresh vegetables and of course lots of corn. Don’t be afraid to dress up like a maritimer but leave the Screech at home.

Don’t forget to sign up for the 2009 Family Team Classic. You will be treated to breakfast, lunch & dinner, some great prizes and lots of fun. Get a sign-up sheet from the pro shop and we look forward to seeing you out there.

We also have a new summer menu at the club. I’m sure by now everyone has enjoyed some of Chef Jason’s great cooking, so try some of the great summer selections Jason has added to the menu. Whether you decide sit in the air conditioned member’s lounge or try it Al Fresco on the patio, we are happy to offer full service everywhere.

Don’t forget about Nine & Dine every Sunday & Monday. Sign up in the Pro Shop and enjoy a hot & cold buffet after golf.

We would also like to let you know well in advance about our second annual casino night hosted by the social committee, on Friday, Sept 25th. The details for this event will be posted around the clubhouse and in the next newsletter. Last year we had a great time with so many members donating their time and effort to benefit Charity. This year will be the same so sign up in the office and let’s all have a great time while helping raise more money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Thanks again to everyone for all their efforts with the C.C.C events and the generosity of giving to these great causes. A special thanks to the Katlin Group for their generous support.

We look forward to seeing you around the club.

Golf Focus Group

Members: Jim Burlington, Geoff James, Greg Hopps, Frank Feld, Greg Burke, Ron Lacey, Graham Watts, Dale Henderson, Len Dzierniejko, Vernanne Ahern, Sheena Lee, Sheila Chiarandini, George Krauss, Ian McClure

The group has had three meetings to date, May 22, June 12 and July 17. Subsequent meetings are held monthly to season’s end. This forum continues to allow us to identify, discuss, recommend and influence a wide variety of golf course related matters and issues.

Since our last update we are pleased to report attention or completion to initial items we identified. Some are summarized as follows:

Overall course condition received tremendous feedback from 144 of the best Mid-Amateur players in Ontario. They were most complimentary of the course and the reception they received from members and staff.

Cart path restoration: The new recycled asphalt dusting which compacts and hardens under sun and warm temperature has had good success. This material has been placed in known washout areas and residential sections where dust is prevalent.

Green restoration: Coming along but it will take some time for new grass to fill in. Grass cut to near normal height and the ball rolls nicely through affected areas.

Bunkers: Have had major restoration done with sand moved, weeds pulled and edges shaped and cleaned. In addition to use of the Sandpro, staff are fan raking entire bunkers which has made significant impact on playability and appearance. Some green side bunkers have stones and pebbles which are being removed but this process will take some extra effort and time to completely eliminate. As such the club has adopted a local rule: allowing players to remove stones and pebbles without penalty. This rule remains in affect until otherwise notified.

Course staking: is now according to final decisions made by GAO coincident with Mid-Amateur tournament. Noticeable changes are white stakes removed right side of 5 and 7, left side of 6 environmental area is now red stakes with green tops which means stroke penalty only, white stakes south of green 13 beyond cart path and right side of 10 red stakes to be moved back to left of cart path (fairway side and at cut line).

Yardage markers and sprinkler heads: measurements are now verified with GAO course mapping and production of yardage books for Mid Amateur. Verification underway to determine if there are any discrepancies to be corrected. Over time appropriate restencling of sprinkler heads and other markings will be completed.

Benches: all broken ones have been replaced and all have been stained. New benches made and will be installed at hole 14.

Porta pottie: on hole 4 and 5 will be moved to the right of 5 tee box now that the wet area has dried up.

Bike Racks: Additional ones to be built although this activity is a low priority at this time.

Geese: continue to be a hindrance and Scully is working hard to chase them away. He is doing up to seven runs a day. Unfortunately, geese do move around to various holes and the task proves to be a huge one. Main priority is to minimize damage to greens and keep fairway 18 clear of droppings to the greatest extent possible. It is hoped that once goslings learn to fly they will depart for good.

Felling of dead trees: ones that were viewed as a potential safety hazard have been felled. Couple of new ones have been identified and will be attended to.

Fescue and brush growth: areas have been identified and will be trimmed.

Algae in ponds: a permanent solution has not been entirely successful. Perhaps the extension from pond 16 to 12 in the fall will enhance flow. However, in the meantime mangement will undergo an experimental trial using straw. There has been some success with this technique in similar situations.

Hospitality cart: will be provided on 10th tee for use of golfers needing to visit club house at the turn. Will be trialed during Men’s and Ladies days and possibly extended to Mixed and Couples days.

Scorecards: handicap rankings of holes is due for review and committee formed for this initiative.

Booking cancellations: to avoid confusion and miscommunication cancellation numbers will be provided to patrons when groups of 2 and 4 are cancelled.

Our meetings are documented in detail and action items developed into a work plan for attention and correction.
This documentation is posted on the bulletin board by the handicap computer to allow for public viewing.

If you require information, have input or any concerns please refer to any committee member so they can attend to your request or pass on accordingly.

Ladies League

What can we say? If it is Thursday we have a more than 50% chance of rain! June, however, was a slight exception – giving us hope that summer had arrived and Thursdays in July would be sunny and warm. Alas it was not to be.

Although Ladies Day was not cancelled on July 2nd, only 7 brave (not crazy) ladies played 18- holes of Bingo, Bango, Bongo; just managing to complete their rounds before it poured. The winners were Sheena Lee with 22 points and Elaine Jackson with 19 points.

July 9th, believe it or not was a great Pin Day, where the winners were determined using the scores on the Odd Holes with * handicap. The 18- hole winners were: Bev Underhill with 36, by retrogression Vernanne Ahern with 36.5 and by retrogression Trish Dwyer with 36.5. The 9- hole winners were: by retrogression Marjorie Elliot with 14.5 and Mary Lou McClure with 14.5.

July 16th dawned sunny and clear. The course was dotted with yellow and we played Team Best Ball from the yellow tees. What fun and what a challenge! The 18- hole winners were: 1st with a score of 44 the team of Joanne Nightingale, Bev Underhill, Elaine Jackson & Bev Hopkins; 2nd with a score of 50 the team of Shirley Egerton, Nancy Wilkie, Carolyn Shea & Erika Dilworth. The 9-hole winners were: 1st with a score of 33 the team of Anne Jukes-Hughes, Peggi Fuller & Sally James; 2nd with a score of 34 the team of Marion Anderson, Pat Dececco & Barb Frewin. Golf was followed by a delicious luncheon and wine tasting with wines from Huff Estates. The lucky incentive winners of yellow prizes from the pro shop were Barb Maheux * sunglasses, Marie Wells * golf shirt & Dora Burke * golf glove. The 50/50 winners, each winning $25.00, were: Kathy ffolliot, Sheilagh Manuel & Phyllis Donaghy.

Then it rained on July 23rd. As of writing this report we are hoping for sunshine on July 30th when some ladies from the Gananoque Golf Club will be our guests. On June 23, 42 ladies from Loyalist were guests at Gananoque, where we were treated to golf, carts, lunch and prizes. We had a wonderful day.

Thanks to Chef Jason, Keith, Rebecca and all the staff for another fine job.
